Celebrating International Women’s Day at Sync with Amelia Stevens

At Sync we are proud to celebrate the women who have made the company what it is today. In this segment of our International Women’s Day series, we are spotlighting Amelia Stevens, Operations Manager, who since joining us a few years ago, has since worked her way up to now running her own team. In this piece Amelia shares challenges, accomplishments and her perspective on the importance of women in leadership roles.

1. What inspired you to pursue your career, and what keeps you motivated?
“I initially started my career as a beauty therapist and had planned to start my own business in April 2020. However, the Covid-19 lockdown forced me to reconsider my career path. After four months on furlough, I took a sales administrator role in IT, assuming it would be temporary until the industry was back to some form of normal.

Although I doubted my capabilities at first, stepping out of my comfort zone completely changed my perspective. Within months, I was training and managing the sales support team, later becoming a Bids and Tenders Manager, which led me to my current role as Operations Manager at Sync.

While my career took an unexpected turn, my background in beauty taught me how to build relationships, which is an invaluable skill that I continue to use. I stay motivated by the variety in my role, the opportunity to work on various different projects, and collaborating with different teams across the business.”

2. Have you ever faced any barriers as a woman in the workplace? How did you overcome it?
“When I entered the IT industry, it was seen as very male-dominated, which was a complete shift from my previous career. My lack of experience and background led to certain perceptions that I found challenging. However, by developing my skills, proving my capabilities, and demonstrating my dedication, I was able to break those assumptions. Over time, I gained confidence and showed that my background doesn’t define my ability.”

3. What advice would you give to young women entering the workplace?
“My advice to young women entering the workplace would be:

  • Be curious – Ask questions, seek training, and embrace new opportunities. Growth happens outside your comfort zone.
  • Mindset matters – It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but breaking down challenges into steps and asking for help makes them manageable. Your mindset is usually the biggest barrier, not the task itself.
  • Confidence comes from knowledge – The more knowledgeable you are about a subject, the more you’ll be able to speak about it with confidence. Continual learning (whether it’s through training, mentorship, or research) sets you apart.
  • Mistakes are learning opportunities – Mistakes are ok, so don’t let them knock you back! Observing and learning from both your own and other’s mistakes are key to growth.”

4. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate progress whilst acknowledging the barriers that still exist. I find it inspiring to hear the stories of women from all backgrounds and how they’ve overcome challenges and supported each other.”

5. Who is a woman—historical or personal—who has inspired you, and why?
“My biggest inspiration is my Mum. After a career break to raise me and my sister, she returned to work as a Support Worker at Mencap, caring for adults with learning difficulties. Through dedication and perseverance, she is now a Regional Manager, managing three Mencap care homes in Northamptonshire. Her dedication and success, all whilst being a mother, has shown me that hard work and resilience pays off.”

International women’s day is a global movement that recognises the efforts of women all around the world and will be celebrated on the 8th of March 2025.
