Sandra Winnup has been with Sync for over 25 years, heading up the expanding Accounts team. Sandra has witnessed the company’s growth and has actively helped shape it to what it is today, making her an integral part of Sync’s identity.
1. What inspired you to pursue your career, and what keeps you motivated?
“From a young age, I always found joy in balancing the family checkbook, helping my dad count money for his business was my version of fun. I did however stumble into accounting by accident, but the satisfaction of solving financial puzzles and resolving customer or supplier issues has kept me motivated.”
2. Have you ever faced any barriers as a woman in the workplace? How did you overcome them?
“I’ve been fortunate to avoid any major hurdles, but there was this one time a colleague asked me to type their notes while in a meeting together. I reminded them that I planned on being an active participant in the discussion, just as they did. Setting clear boundaries has been my go-to strategy.”
3. What advice would you give to young women entering the workplace?
“Don’t be afraid to speak up. Confidence is key, and your voice matters. Build a network of mentors and peers who can offer support and guidance. Remember, your unique perspective is a valuable asset to any organisation.
4. What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
“For me, International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality and recognise the contributions of women in the workplace.”
5. Who is a woman—historical or personal—who has inspired you, and why?
“My aunt – who has been a bookkeeper for most of her life – has been a significant inspiration. She has been so dedicated to her profession through the years, and her example has shown me the stability and opportunities that this field offers. In a way, she has paved a visible path of success for herself that really encouraged me in my own endeavours.”
International women’s day is a global movement that recognises the efforts of women all around the world and will be celebrated on the 8th of March 2025.
