Since its release seven years ago, the feature of AirDrop on Apple devices has proven to be a very easy and hassle-free way of sharing files with one another.
AirDrop works by using the power of Bluetooth to make connections with other devices. After a successful connection is made, a point-to-point WiFi is created and this enables data to be transferred.
Over the years, people have been using the feature to share photos, videos, contacts, voice memos and map locations with their pals.
Other people have been a little more creative however, using it as a tool to share their favourite memes and cute pictures with brave strangers that have left their AirDrop settings public.

If you don’t want to receive a random AirDrop…
Have you ever accidentally sent an AirDrop to a random stranger? If the answer is yes, then you’ll be pleased to know that there is a way to ensure that you’ll never do this again.
On your device, go to Settings > General > AirDrop. Here, you’ll see that you have the option to AirDrop to contacts only, or to every Apple device set to public in your surrounding area.
Therefore, to avoid someone that you don’t know seeing your new nails or latest selfie, simply select ‘Contacts Only’. This will ensure that it will just be your friends who see your future AirDrop availability.
It is worth pointing out that even if you have your AirDrop security selected to ‘Everyone’, files that are accidentally sent to people won’t be accepted automatically. As shown in the images above, the receiver has the option to accept or decline the request.
Within the Settings panel, you’ll also see that you have a ‘Receiving Off’ option. Therefore, to avoid receiving AirDrop requests from random people, simply select this option.
You also have the option to monitor your AirDrop security on your device’s Control Centre.
To access the Control Centre on the iPhone X or later devices, simply swipe down from the upper-right corner of your screen. If you have the iPhone 8 or an earlier device, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
After this, touch and hold the network settings card in the upper-left corner and then tap AirDrop. Finally, choose one of three options as mentioned.
